Ingredient In Focus: Stem Cell Technology

Stem Cell technology may sound like a skincare science of the future, but it is very much a vital part of the Scentiana product range. Working in harmony with the skin, we use Stem Cells taken from the life-giving natural cells of Jasmine and Bougainvillea which are proven to regenerate, repair and revitalise the skin.

Stem cells: the lowdown

So, what exactly are plant stem cells and what do they do? They are cells derived from a plant’s meristematic tissues. In non-science lab language these are cells that have the ability to divide, self-renew, and regenerate which in turn, when applied topically, can encourage the skin to do the same.

Whilst Stem Cell technology may sound like the stuff of science lab dreams, it is by no means new. In fact, it has now been proven to show incredible results. According to an article from Biotech in the National Library of Medicine, “Plant cells are termed as totipotent cells. Such cells have the potential to regenerate.”

Think of Stem Cells as having lots of energy. They set to work on two levels: firstly they work at the extracellular matrix of the dermis, boosting the synthesis of fibres, proteoglycans, collagen and elastin which will boost the firmness and plumpness of the skin. Secondly, they also permeate deep down in the skin hypodermis to help stop inflammation in its tracks. Not only this, but plant Stem Cells are also rich in Antioxidants which protect the skin from environmental aggressors (in the form of pollution and sunlight) but also help repair previous damage. Perhaps we should just call them little miracle workers!

Why do we need stem cells in our skincare?

Plant Stem Cells have the ability to breathe new life into skin. Working harmoniously with our bodies’ natural processes, they stimulate skin cells and accelerate cell regeneration and repair, helping the dermis to function youthfully and optimally. If inflammation is reduced and cell turnover increased, skin is left looking smoother and more glowy due to increased collagen production. Lines are also less pronounced and skin radiates with good health.

How stem cells are used in Scentiana products

Our Glorious Lip Balm and tinted Queenly Lip Blush both contain Indian Jasmine stem cells. Indian Jasmine is a well-known, beautifully scented oriental flower that has sacred status in Asia: it opens at the end of the day releasing its full olfactory potential. Well known for their potent antioxidant and regenerative properties, our Jasmine Stem Cells have been paired with Mangosteen which together creates a powerful dual protection mechanism for the skin. The Mangosteen, rich in antioxidants, increases the bioavailability of the Jasmine making the stem cells even more effective.

These qualities are particularly beneficial for lip care since this magic duo protects this delicate skin area from environmental stressors. In clinical trials over 28 days, 65% of women said their skin was firmer, whilst 80% said smoothness had increased.

Another Scentiana product offering the benefits of stem cell technology is the Replenishing Body Cream which contains highly effective Bougainvillea plant stem cells. First discovered in Brazil, Bougainvillea is known as a symbol of natural healing and its ability to grow in harsh conditions means it has a resilience and unstoppable growth factor that transitions naturally into skincare. Working on the fibres, and tissues beneath the skin, it helps to bolster supporting tissues as well as reducing inflammation. The result is more even toned, smooth skin with tests taken over 28 days, showing that 89% of women declared that their skin seemed toned and firmer, 81% of women declared that their body was slightly remodelled and 70% of women declared a slimming effect. Here at Scentiana we pride ourselves on using the latest technologies that work in harmony with our skin to bring you the greatest results. We hope you will reap the benefits of Scentiana’s Stem Cell products too.
