Ingredient in Focus: SEA BUCKTHORN OIL
It’s often those ingredients that enjoy a rich history of use in natural medicine that prove to be the most trusted and beneficial – such as Sea Buckthorn Oil, which hydrates and protects the skin with an abundance of goodness.
The Romans believed the orange-yellow berry contained the strength of the sun deity Sol and was gifted to men by Mars, the god of warfare. A staple ingredient in the warriors’ diet during battle, Sea Buckthorn was believed to replenish military might and power.
Scentiana introduces this powerful nectar, found in our Rescuing Body Balm, Sensual Body Oil and Glorious Lip Balm.
WHAT IS SEA BUCKTHORN OIL & WHY DO YOU NEED IT?
First things first. Despite its name, the tiny orange-yellow berries of Sea Buckthorn do not come from the sea. The oil is, in fact, extracted from the berries of the flowering Sea Buckthorn shrub (Hippophaë rhamnoides), also called a ‘Siberian pineapple’, which is native to Asia and North-Western Europe. The resulting skin-loving liquid is packed with protective antioxidants and deeply nourishing Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 3, 6 and 7), as well as a high content of vitamins A and E. No wonder Sea Buckthorn has, for centuries, been so well reputed.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BERRY
Traditional Asian medicine used this sunshine-packed berry to restore vitality, as well as to treat blood, heart and lung diseases. It is said that Genghis Khan relied on three treasures: a well-organised army, strict discipline and... Sea Buckthorn.
Many legends about this golden fruit have been passed down through the generations by the indigenous Siberian population, who believed the berries could stop bleeding whilst preserving strength and bringing an overall sense of calm. Between the 15th and 17th century, Russian herbalists used Sea Buckthorn to treat stomach, skin and eye diseases. Berry-infused potions were used to bathe babies, protecting their sensitive skin from inflammation, dryness and peeling. Some women would also use it as a hair rinse.
While Sea Buckthorn’s popularity has faded since ancient times, the fruit is still used in baking, homemade fruit drinks or perhaps a tangy tea. More recently, its numerous beauty and health benefits have been heralded by the modern beauty industry where its skin-boosting properties have come into their own.
WHAT CAN SEA BUCKTHORN DO FOR YOUR SKIN?
Wonderful for encouraging healthy supple skin and overall radiance (and even improving the appearance of scars), this glow-getter oil can tackle a wide range of beauty concerns. Regular use can have the following effects:
Soothing: The oil’s gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is a great anti-inflammatory which speeds up nutrient metabolism, improves circulation and fills the skin with oxygen.
Protecting: Sea Buckthorn Oil’s high fatty acid content softens the epidermis and locks in moisture, protecting the skin from dehydration. These saturated fatty acids create a protective film, also improving the skin’s defence against UVB light and cold weather while increasing elasticity.
Toning: Sea Buckthorn berries are reputed to carry 10 times more vitamin C than a typical orange! Alongside a high content of Vitamin A, it improves skin tone and helps to fade pigmentation.
Acne-calming: Acne and blackhead-prone skin typically has a lower linoleic acid content, a quality found in Sea Buckthorn which can help to regulate the functioning of sebaceous glands and combat inflammation.
Youth-Enhancing: Sea Buckthorn Oil is an invaluable source of lipophilic antioxidants which help to fight ageing and wrinkles.
