Ingredient In Focus: Babassu Oil
Native to north-eastern Brazil, the Babassu palm (Attalea speciosa) is one of nature's most resourceful trees. Every part of the tree is valued: its leaves are woven into baskets and roofs, its fibres are transformed into household tools, its fruits are used as food and traditional medicine¹, and its kernels are pressed into a luxurious golden oil renowned for its skin-loving properties. Babassu oil has been sustainably harvested by local communities for generations, who gather the fallen fruits by hand without harming the palms. Unlike many commercially cultivated oils, Babassu requires no deforestation or intensive plantations. This regenerative harvesting method supports biodiversity, provides vital income for thousands of families, and allows nearly every part of the fruit to be put to use, making Babassu one of the most sustainable botanical oils in skincare.
In Brazilian folk medicine, Babassu oil (Orbignya oleifera seed oil) has long been used to soothe skin wounds and calm inflammation. Today, these long-held traditions are increasingly supported by scientific research, highlighting Babassu as a highly versatile oil.

The benefits and composition of Babassu oil
Belonging to the same botanical family as the coconut palm, Babassu oil shares a similar fatty acid profile while offering a lighter, faster-absorbing feel without the greasiness often associated with tropical oils. Composed of approximately 72% lipids,² Babassu oil is particularly rich in beneficial fatty acids and antioxidants, making it a nutrient-dense emollient with excellent moisturising properties. Its key components include medium-chain and monounsaturated fatty acids:
Lauric Acid (~50%): A medium-chain fatty acid naturally present in the skin's sebum and found in Babassu and coconut oils. Valued for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties, lauric acid helps maintain skin integrity, reinforce the skin barrier and support a balanced skin microbiome.³ In cosmetics, it also functions as an emulsifier and texture-enhancing ingredient.
Oleic Acid (20–25%): An omega-9 fatty acid with deeply moisturising and skin-softening properties. It helps improve skin elasticity, enhances moisture penetration and supports a smoother, more supple complexion, helping minimise the appearance of fine lines.
Myristic Acid (15–20%): Contributes to Babassu oil's moisturising and protective qualities while acting as a natural thickening agent. As an emollient, it helps reinforce the skin's lipid barrier, protecting against environmental stressors and leaving the skin smooth and comfortable.
The combination of lauric and myristic acids gives Babassu oil exceptional emollient properties. Together, these fatty acids soften, soothe and protect the skin while helping to reduce transepidermal water loss. By replenishing the skin's lipid barrier, they improve moisture retention, boost the skin’ resilience and leave it feeling supple. Their calming and conditioning properties also make Babassu particularly suitable for sensitive or easily irritated skin. Thanks to its balanced composition of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, Babassu oil is naturally stable, ensuring excellent shelf stability.
Emerging research suggests that Babassu encourages fibroblast migration, the specialised skin cells responsible for producing collagen, while helping regulate the inflammatory response. Studies also indicate that it supports the skin's natural repair process by promoting collagen production, encouraging healthy tissue renewal, protecting against microbes and maintaining a balanced inflammatory response.⁴

Babassu oil: one of the botanical treasures in SCENTIANA's collection
At SCENTIANA, we believe the most outstanding ingredients unite efficacy, sensoriality and responsible sourcing. Babassu oil fully embodies this philosophy. Suitable for most skin types, including dry, combination and sensitive skin, it delivers deep nourishment while feeling weightless. Naturally buttery yet fast-absorbing, Babassu transforms upon contact with the skin, elevating the body care ritual with a luxurious sensory experience. It replenishes lost lipids while leaving a silky, conditioned finish without an oily residue. By improving hydration and skin smoothness, it enhances the skin's natural radiance, for a healthier and more luminous look.
These qualities make Babassu oil the perfect foundation for Rescuing Body Balm, where it is paired with retinyl acetate, a stable form of vitamin A. Together, they create a synergistic treatment that delivers both immediate comfort and long-term skin renewal. While retinyl acetate stimulates cellular turnover and supports collagen production to improve skin texture and firmness, Babassu helps reinforce the skin's lipid barrier, minimising the dryness and irritation commonly associated with retinoids. Its lightweight texture allows the active ingredient to absorb efficiently, while its nourishing fatty acids and naturally occurring antioxidants help keep the skin soft and deeply hydrated throughout the renewal process.
Explore the science behind our Rescuing Body Balm, where Babassu oil works in harmony with a selection of unique botanical actives to nurture beautifully soft and luminous skin.
