Slow up is the new glow up: embracing a slow summer
"Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience."
– Ralph Waldo Emerson
Our connection with nature is rooted in our biology and genes. Both Nature and humans operate on cyclical principles, with recurring patterns and phases that are interconnected.
Research demonstrates that our circadian rhythms (our body’s intrinsic 24h clock) regulate a wide array of physiological, mental and behavioural changes. By aligning our lifestyle choices with our natural biological rhythms and syncing with the Earth’s seasonal cycles, we can significantly improve our health outcomes. Summer presents a perfect opportunity to adopt a more measured pace, allowing us to better harmonise with our surroundings.
Slow summer is a call for gratitude in the present moment
Society was not designed to operate all year round at a frenetic pace. While it’s inspiring to dream big and set ambitious goals, it’s equally important to carve out time and space to release pressure, expectations and urgency. This is not a roadblock on your journey; rather, it is a valuable ally.
You might be familiar with the Italian expression "Il dolce far niente," which translates to "the sweetness of doing nothing." It embodies a philosophy that embraces life’s simple pleasures, whether it’s savouring a cup of coffee with a friend, lounging on the beach, or simply sitting on a park bench, taking in the world around you. Surrender and let go. Il dolce far niente is a form of mindfulness that can be practiced anywhere, without the need for yoga or pilates.

Immerse yourself in the replenishing beauty of Nature
Nature has a calming and restorative effect on our mental and emotional well-being. Additionally, being outside allows you to absorb natural vitamin D, which is essential for hormonal health and strong immune system.

Get on a sunrise-sunset gazing ritual
A long-standing practice that has faded over time, particularly in urban areas, yet offers incredible benefits. We are deeply influenced by light; it can boost our mood and motivation, reconnecting us to the natural rhythms of the seasons. Sungazing stimulates the hypothalamus tract, the part of our brain that regulates our biological clock. By witnessing both sunrise and sunset, we receive the full spectrum of light needed to realign our circadian rhythm, balance our hormones, and improve our overall well-being throughout the day. Some of the benefits of sungazing include increased vitamin D absorption, heightened serotonin production, enhanced melatonin secretion.

Enjoy Earthing to your heart's content...
For many of us who cherish beach vacations, there's something truly special about walking barefoot in the warm sand while listening to the calming sound of ocean waves. Grounding/Earthing is a gentle wellness practice gifted to us by nature. When we connect physically with the Earth’s natural energy, it can help reduce inflammation, ease anxiety, and lower cortisol levels, creating a sense of tranquility in our busy lives. The Earth’s surface is rich in negative ions, which act as antioxidants and help neutralise harmful free radicals. When we walk barefoot in the sand, we open ourselves up to absorbing these beneficial ions, allowing us to find balance and rejuvenation.
- ...and hug trees more often
Let’s not forget the healing power of shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing.” Engaging with nature, whether by touching flowers and trees (aka "tree hugging") or walking on grass, offers similar therapeutic benefits. It reminds us of the existing beauty outside of our everyday routines. Shinrin-yoku can be enjoyed in any natural setting — parks, gardens, beaches, or forests. If conditions prevent us from going barefoot, remember that simply touching the trees can still bring us comfort and connection to the earth.

Napping is the new sleeping in
With longer daylight hours and abundant sunlight, our bodies are naturally inclined to require less sleep during the Summer. However, taking naps during this season is still highly recommended. Research indicates that power naps — lasting under 30 minutes — can significantly boost mood, reduce feelings of fatigue, and enhance alertness. When taken in the early afternoon, right after lunch, these short naps can even lower blood pressure and promote heart health.

Savour local and seasonal produce
To maintain a diet rich in antioxidants and hydrating properties, focus on nourishing your body and skin from within. Fresh fruits like watermelon, peaches, cherries, cantaloupes, berries, grapes, and apricots, along with vegetables such as cucumber, courgette, tomatoes, beets, and summer squashes, are excellent choices. Another great addition is sprouts, which are little superfoods that you can easily incorporate into most meals for added benefits. Stay hydrated by enjoying fruit-infused water and spring water to help replenish minerals lost through sweating.
Less internet connection, more human (re)connection
Summer offers an ideal opportunity for digital detox, acting as a much-needed reset for both mind and body. Cutting back on technology and unplugging from our devices is essential, as screens emit blue light, which disrupts the body’s natural melatonin production. Additionally, excessive tech usage can adversely impact dopamine release. Although dopamine is a neurotransmitter linked to pleasure and reward, its overindulgence or mismanaged release can lead to negative outcomes, such as addiction, impaired impulse control, and diminished enjoyment of other activities.
Instead, take the time to reconnect with the world around you.
Get spontaneous. Relish in outdoor meals with friends and family, nurture your existing relationships, gather around a bonfire, watch the sunset, or host fun pool parties and picnics in the park. These social connections are vital for promoting emotional well-being.
